How to Check Your Tax Refund Status in T&T

TaxDash Team·

You can check your income tax refund on e-Tax at etax.ird.gov.tt using View Refund Status. It works whether or not you're logged in. You can also email eTax@ird.gov.tt with your BIR number, the tax type, the refund period, the amount you expect and a contact number.

Check Your Refund on e-Tax

If you have an e-Tax login

  1. Log in at etax.ird.gov.tt with your ttconnect ID and e-Tax password.
  2. Choose View Refund Status.
  3. Pick your income tax account and the year.

If you don't have a login

e-Tax also offers View Refund Status from its non-logged-in services. The IRD's non-logged-in account services ask for your BIR file number, your account number and a BIR Letter ID. A Letter ID is printed on recent IRD correspondence, such as a Notice of Assessment or a payment receipt.

No login yet? Our guide to getting into e-Tax walks you through it. It usually takes one or two business days.

By email

Send your BIR number, the tax type (individual income tax), the period of the refund, the expected amount and a contact number to eTax@ird.gov.tt.

How Long Do Refunds Take?

The IRD doesn't publish a standard processing time for individual refunds. Here's what the record shows:

  • August 2023: the Ministry of Finance released all individual refunds of TTD 20,000 or less, with over 33,000 cheques sent out through TTPost.
  • February 2025: the Minister directed the IRD to pay all eligible individual refunds up to TTD 25,000, covering 87,376 taxpayers and about TTD 246 million.

In practice, refunds are often released in batches rather than one by one. What you control is how quickly your return gets processed:

  • File online while logged in. Logged-in returns are processed fastest.
  • Non-logged-in returns wait for your signed declaration. Your return isn't processed until the signed Declaration Form reaches an IRD office, and a form signed in pencil can't be processed.
  • Keep your address current. A refund can go astray if the IRD has an old address. If that's happened, call 800-TAXX (8299).

How Refunds Are Paid

  • Cheque: the 2023 batch went out by mail through TTPost.
  • Collection: the IRD may contact you by email or phone to collect your refund. Bring valid ID.
  • Direct deposit: the IRD's e-Tax FAQ lists direct deposit as a way to get refunds faster, but it doesn't spell out how to set it up. Ask the IRD on 800-TAXX if you want to use it.
  • Refunds can't be paid into a foreign bank account.

No Refund Showing? Make Sure You Actually Filed

If you're a PAYE employee and your salary is your only income, you aren't required to file. But if too much tax came out of your pay, the IRD won't refund it automatically. You only get it back by filing a return that claims it.

The usual reasons people are owed money:

  • Pension or annuity contributions your employer didn't account for
  • First-time homeowner mortgage interest (up to TTD 30,000 a year)
  • Tertiary education expenses (up to TTD 72,000 per household)

See how much income tax you should be paying to check whether you're likely owed a refund.

Watch Out for Refund Scams

In April and July 2026, the IRD warned about fake emails saying you have a refund waiting behind a link. The IRD says it never contacts taxpayers with links or codes like that, and genuine IRD letters carry a Letter ID. Don't click. Type etax.ird.gov.tt into your browser yourself.

Claim What You're Owed

TaxDash finds the deductions your employer's PAYE missed, shows you your refund before you file, and then fills in your e-Tax return for you to review and submit.
